About Book

Prima Facie

→The original novel of the Oliver and Tony Award-winning stage play "Preliminary Evidence," starring Jodie Comer, is a powerful work that deeply explores women's rights and judicial justice. It is highly recommended by The New York Times and Publishers Weekly!
→ What exactly happened in the 782 days between the initial presentation of evidence and the final trial? Compared to the stage play, this book includes richer plot details, including not only delicate psychological descriptions but also portrayals of her educational experience and family situation. It is these that build the elite female lawyer Tessa, and how her life was completely shattered by the sexual assault. Readers can fully understand Tessa's dilemma.
→Tessa is "one third, but also millions!" Written to every woman struggling under the shadow of patriarchy - "Look to your left, then look to your right. I am also broken, but I still stand here, and I will never be silent."
......
I want to imagine a network of women who are spontaneously connected and saying to you - "If you have ever experienced this, this book will tell you that it is not your shame." - Suzy Miller Media Recommendation
* This novel plays like a stage play. Miller makes Tessa's story more compelling and authentic by fleshing out what was originally a 100-minute monologue.
—The New York Times
* Miller writes this powerful legal novel based on her 2023 Olivier Award- and Tony Award-winning play… It is a compelling, emotionally authentic story that addresses contemporary issues of law and social justice.
——Booklist magazine
Miller's narrative is remarkably effective, a passionate work that illuminates the unfair social landscape faced by survivors of sexual assault.
—Publishers Weekly
Synopsis: Tessa, a young woman from a working-class family, graduated from Cambridge University Law School through diligence and hard work, becoming a rising star in the legal profession. She excels at defending sexual assault suspects with sharp words and keen insight. However, a date with a flirtatious male colleague turns her from defender to victim.
Tessa decided to prosecute the perpetrator herself. Standing in the witness box, Tessa discovered that the defense she once considered "procedural justice" had instead subjected her to repeated physical and emotional abuse. In sexual assault cases, the burden of proof often falls on the victim, forcing her to repeatedly recall and recount her experiences. How could she prove her "disagreement" at that moment? Her fuzzy memories and missing evidence, seemingly normal reactions to the victim, now made her fight for her rights daunting.
Faced with the cold gaze of the judge and the complex legal process, she began to wonder: Is the law meant to protect the weak, or has it become a weapon in the hands of the powerful? In this male-dominated society, how can women's voices and rights be heard and protected? In this destined to be difficult lawsuit, can she regain her lost dignity? How can the bias and injustice hidden in the judicial system be exposed and corrected?
