This book consists of three independent parts.
"Writing Degree Zero" is equivalent to an early structuralist literary manifesto. In response to Sartre's question "What is literature", it proposed a neutral literary view that breaks away from radical literary tendencies, made profound criticisms of French existentialism and left-wing literature, and significantly influenced the subsequent development of Western contemporary literary thought.
"Essays in New Literary Criticism" contains the author's detailed analysis of several classic works of French literature and is regarded as a model of structuralist literary analysis.
"Inaugural Speech at the French Academy" is the author's speech at the ceremony when he took office as a professor at the French Academy. It is equivalent to another book of the author's late literary thoughts.
