Symposium

Plato (c. 427–347 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher and one of the greatest philosophers and thinkers of the West. This book is a seminal dialogue on Plato's middle period of idealism and aesthetic thought. The dialogue describes a gathering of friends at the home of the tragedian Agathon, celebrating an award-winning play. The attendees included the rhetorician Phaedrus, the comedian Aristophanes, and the philosopher Socrates. The dialogue primarily consists of seven odes to Eros, each of which delve deeper into themes. The discussion shifts from praise for Eros to an inquiry into the nature of love, then to the soul's quest for knowledge under Eros's guidance, ultimately leading to the soul's continuous ascent toward the world of pure ideas, guided by the ideal of beauty.
