About Book
About Book
This is a must-have Orhan Pamuk film.
Istanbul: Memories of a City chronicles both a personal history and the melancholy of this city. The city's unique hüzünü (souhyüan) long permeated the young Orhan Pamuk's body and soul. Now a writer, with his unique sense of history and exceptional descriptive talent, Pamuk revisits his family's secrets, unearthing the threads of his past to piece together a narrative of contemporary Istanbul life. Following his formative memories, we witness his personal, lost moments, explore the city's history, where tradition and modernity coexist, and experience the poignant melancholy of Turkish civilization.
Istanbul: Memories of a City comprises 450 black-and-white photographs, with 230 new images added to the original edition, all personally selected by the author. Pamuk connects the images to his own memories: Turkey's hüzün, the stark black-and-white architecture of the city, the impoverished inhabitants of the provincial capital, post-imperial melancholy, and the desolation of ruined buildings.
Pamuk himself said: "Istanbul: Memories of a City is a book based on text; the new edition is a book based on visuals. In the previous book, the photographs were attached to the text; in this edition, I can say that the text interprets the emotions carried by the photographs. Reading the book from right to left is also very interesting."
------------------------
This is an autobiographical work by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. For Pamuk, Istanbul has always been a city steeped in the relics of empire. The city's unique hüzünü (hüsün) ingrained itself into the young Pamuk's very being. Now a writer, Pamuk, with his unique sense of history and exceptional descriptive talent, revisits his family's secret history, unearthing the threads of his past to piece together a narrative of contemporary Istanbul life. By following his childhood memories, we witness his personal journey of lost beauty, explore the city's history of coexisting tradition and modernity, and experience the melancholy of Turkish civilization.
"Istanbul's fate is my fate: I am attached to this city because it has made me who I am today." "Istanbul" is not only a personal history, but also the sorrow of this city.
------------------------
Every great city needs a great writer to write out its soul and stories, so that we can truly grasp the essence of this city. Dublin has Joyce, Prague has Kafka, Lisbon has Pessoa, Beijing has Lao She, Shanghai has Eileen Chang... and Istanbul finally has its own Orhan Pamuk. - Liang Wendao Where the cold air and hot air meet in the sky, rain and dew will inevitably fall; where the cold and warm currents meet in the ocean, fish will breed; the collision of multiple cultures in human society will always produce outstanding writers and outstanding works. Therefore, it can be said that the city of Istanbul came first, and then Pamuk's novels came into being. - Mo Yan Pamuk is loyal to the rich poetry in his heart. A meaningful and charming elegy - sung to the childhood memories, sung to Istanbul - brought him to the world. - The Observer
Pamuk not only captures the conflict between Istanbul's past and present, but also reveals the city's elusive, timeless beauty.
—New Statesman
More and more Western countries are being impacted by foreign cultures and beliefs. This is a problem we all have to face, not just the people of Istanbul who are shrouded in hüzün. — San Francisco Times
Istanbul, straddling the Dardanelles... Orhan Pamuk is a lucid chronicler of the city... His novels offer insight into the differences between East and West... —Chicago Tribune
