About Book

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

This is a memoir by a psychotherapist, telling stories that happened in the consulting room. In this small, enclosed space, people reveal their truest and most vulnerable side; it is also here that they receive companionship and listening, and also gain valuable awareness, growth, and change.
In the book, we will see the stories of four visitors, they are:
A successful, self-righteous Hollywood producer in his forties who thinks everyone around him is an idiot;
A university teacher in her thirties, newly married, was diagnosed with a terminal illness and had little time left;
A 69-year-old woman who has been divorced three times, feels lonely and desperate, and claims that if life doesn't get better, she will commit suicide on her 70th birthday;
A girl in her twenties who has a history of family trauma, alcoholism, and is frequently frustrated in love.
The book also features a fifth person seeking help: the therapist herself. A single, working mother in her forties, she suffered a breakup and nearly collapsed. A friend suggested, "Maybe you should talk to someone," so she sought out a therapist herself. When she transitions to the client's perspective, sitting on another therapist's couch and confiding her inner vulnerability and grief, we can even more deeply appreciate the healing and transformative power of psychotherapy.
This book reveals the psychotherapy process from the perspectives of both therapist and client, allowing us to discover that, regardless of our diverse backgrounds, the struggles we face are universal: loving and being loved, regret, choice, control, uncertainty, and death—these are all issues we must collectively learn to face as human beings. The real-life pain and life dilemmas we face resonate with and offer hope in this book.
This book was a highly recommended self-help book by numerous US media outlets in 2019. It made the annual must-read lists of publications like The New York Times, Time, People, and Variety, was a top-10 Amazon bestseller of the year, and a Harvard Business School recommended book. Two years after its publication, it has been licensed in over 40 languages worldwide, with sales exceeding 700,000 copies. A television series is currently in development, starring Eva Longoria, the renowned actress from Desperate Housewives.
