By recounting the invention of the Chinese typewriter, this book illustrates the mechanical revolution in the Chinese-speaking world and explores the history of Chinese's quest for survival, adaptation, and influence on technological change. The book describes the various attempts, failures, and successes of Chinese users in the process of inventing the Chinese typewriter over nearly a century, revealing how Chinese has broken free from the hegemony of alphabetic scripts, integrated into the globalized information age, and regained its unique position.
