Politics of the Aristocratic Clans in the Eastern Jin Dynasty

Drawing upon extensive historical materials and rigorous textual research and analysis, this book re-examines the issue of aristocratic politics in medieval Chinese history. It argues that what scholars both in China and abroad commonly refer to as the aristocratic politics of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties periods in fact only existed during the Eastern Jin dynasty. Aristocratic politics, the book contends, was an aberrant form of imperial power that emerged under specific historical conditions, characterized by its temporary and transitional nature, and manifested as a joint governance between aristocratic families and the imperial court. By avoiding the traditional pitfall of defining aristocratic families solely through marriage and official appointments, this book offers insightful perspectives on this crucial issue in medieval Chinese political history, possessing significant academic value.
