This volume contains Chekhov's classic plays, "Uncle Vanya," "Three Sisters," and "The Cherry Orchard," arranged in chronological order, and includes Jiao Juyin's "Afterword to the Translation of 'The Cherry Orchard'," written in 1943. While these three plays differ in their plots, they all express a theme that Chekhov consistently focused on: his aversion to the gray masses prevalent in late 19th-century Russian society, who relied solely on incoherent talk and fantasies of the "future" to enrich their empty, decadent, and lazy present.
