About Book

Quel bowling sul Tevere

Mentor of Wong Kar-wai and Jia Zhangke, aesthetic idol of Scorsese and Wim Wenders, record-breaker of the triple Grand Slam at the Cannes, Venice, and Berlin International Film Festivals, Oscar winner and world-renowned master of art Antonioni's story sketches. Unique landscapes under the director's gaze, paper films interpreted with words. Included are the inspirational embryos of "Days in the Clouds" and "Eros".

"Our concrete real world has a ghostly abstract nature"

Editor's Recommendation: This book contains the creative notes of world-renowned film master Michelangelo Antonioni, documenting his observations, feelings, and creative ideas from his work and travels. Each of the 33 stories served as material for films in the making. This "writing director" uses a visual brushstroke imbued with a photographic eye to "sketch" various situations, weaving together landscapes and imagery rich with meaning. These works possess not only a transcendent literary quality but also connect with the films he directed, constructing the poetic world of a master.

◎ An inspirational sketchbook by a winner of three major film festivals, showcasing a concentrated burst of An's style elements:
Ambiguous and alienated emotions, an elusive fate, inexplicable undercurrents of violence, a helpless and naked heart, a hidden and illusory reality... This work continues the modernist core of iconic works such as "L'Avventura," "Night," "Red Desert," and "Blow-Up," using words to interpret the crises and anxieties of the spiritual world. It not only includes the "textual embryos" of his late classics "Days in the Clouds" and "Eros," but also the "creative soul" of unfilmed works.
◎ Visual distillation and thematic montage invite readers to experience the famous director's way of observing the world:
Antonioni's unique "cinematic eye" writing encompasses more than just flashes of cinematic jargon, such as "eye pans" and "fade-ins," or scenes with out-of-sync sound and image, or audible voiceovers. It also encompasses the visual sketches and montages of various pre-filmed materials. The author freely navigates the realm of non-fiction and fiction, transparently demonstrating the creative process that encompasses the core concept of narrative.
◎ The new edition cover is designed by a cutting-edge designer, trying to fit in with An's style and making it more collectible:
The main visual image features sketches by Georges Seurat, a leading artist of the Pointillist school, titled "Night Walk" and "Man Reading." The psychedelic red and green colors are freely rendered, evoking the diffuse stream-of-consciousness writing of Arnold. The cover is constructed from a silver card coated with an ultra-gloss film and reversed glazing to recreate the effect of matte light and shadow. The inner cover features a space shuttle matte powder coated with a tactile film, creating a unique and subtle feel that complements the delicate and ethereal temperament.

📖 Synopsis: An encounter that begins and ends, a lingering love, a letter of self-confession, a crime of incest and patricide, a shooting with unknown motives, a voyage of life and death... ...
This is Antonioni's sketch of the story and the material for his film in the making.
Various emotional fragments and inspiration fragments construct the transcendental world of a master.

📖 Celebrity Recommendation: During my student years, I was deeply influenced by Antonioni's work, having watched many of his films and read many of his books. I still remember his description of space: immersing yourself in it for ten minutes allows you to communicate with it. It was then that I suddenly realized that space is alive, something you can touch and interact with.
Jia Zhangke: I've seen a lot of films I particularly like, films that confront the world head-on, like Antonioni's "A Moment to Remember." To this day, he still tells me, and tells us all, what he saw in "L'Avventura": that our lives are a mess. For decades, he's been saying that our lives are a mess, but you can actually see some changes in him. He might add: "Our lives are a mess, but that's just how life is."
—— Lou Ye I was captivated by L’Avventura and Antonioni’s later films. He looked directly into the mystery of the soul. I hope I can continue to experience these images and wander around them.
—Martin Scorsese: I tend to observe and think from the character's subjective perspective, while Michelangelo is calmer and more detached, not in the middle, but rather the storyteller's perspective. His theme is alienation: separation, incompatibility, and distance. My films bear similar labels. For me, alienation gradually takes shape in the film, while Michelangelo's alienation is a persistent presence.
— Wim Wenders

📖 Media recommendation: In the empty and silent spaces of the world, he found metaphors that can illuminate the silent spaces in our hearts. He also found a weird and terrifying beauty in it: simple and pristine, beautiful and elegant, full of mystery, and lingering in the heart.
— Academy Award Ceremony Speech for Lifetime Achievement These essays, like Antonioni’s films, combine luminous landscapes with ethereal stories… These are clearly his working notes, and they are interesting both for their analysis of the director’s methods and for their literary content.
—Library Journal
This book asks a question that serious and tenacious filmmakers cannot avoid: does cinema welcome ideas as much as it welcomes the great god of plot?
