About Book
About Book
"A Man Collecting Shark Teeth: Selected Poems by Hu Xudong" features 128 of the poet's most representative poems across three collections, showcasing diverse styles and languages. Through his unique "Hu-esque language," beneath an exterior of "mockery" and "carnival," lies a core of "introversion" and "restraint," collectively forming a multifaceted and complete poetic castle. Hu Xudong (1974-2021), originally named Hu Xudong and known as "Beard," was born in rural Chongqing and later moved to Hubei. He served as an associate professor at the Institute of World Literature, School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, and as deputy director of the Brazilian Cultural Center at Peking University. His research areas included comparative literature and world literature, world poetry since modernism, and Latin American literature. He published poetry collections such as "The Power of Calendars," "Travel/Poetry," "White Cat Tuotuo Lost," "Pieces of Poetry," and "A Man Collecting Shark Teeth: Selected Poems by Hu Xudong." His essay collections include "To Hell with Brazil," "Hu's Nonsense of Floating Life," and "Hu's Random Thoughts on Food." His translated poetry collections include "My Heart, What Are You Waiting For?" and "Flowers and Nausea: Selected Poems by Andrade." He was awarded the Liu Lian Poetry Prize, the Rou Gang Poetry Prize, the Tomorrow Ergun Poetry Prize, and the Pearl River Poetry Festival Ten-Year Grand Prize, and was hailed as "a representative figure among poets born in the 1970s."
