书籍简介
Post-war Hong Kong society, facing a surging population and the need for reconstruction, adopted the globally popular modernist design, pursuing simplicity and emphasizing functionality and practicality. Local craftsmen implemented imported architectural concepts, using local materials and gradually developing an architectural system unique to Hong Kong, blending diverse cultural and ideological influences, in response to the climate and social environment. This book explores different stages of Hong Kong's architectural development from the 1950s to the 1980s, using architectural stories as a starting point to connect Hong Kong's architectural context with that of Asia and other parts of the world. It aims to address the myth that "Hong Kong architecture lacks distinctive characteristics" and to find the place of "Hong Kong architecture" within the endless flow of time.
This book is not only a written record but also features diverse visual materials, including historical photos, plans, renderings, and hand-drawn sketches obtained from institutions worldwide and architects' families, as well as timelines and 3D model diagrams meticulously compiled by the research team. Beyond text, it hopes to construct a rich visual narrative, recreating the vanished appearance of post-war architecture.
